Sightseeing isn't the only thing you can do in the region, there are many popular camping and hiking areas offering some very scenic vistas. If you aren't interested in camping and don't want to go to the beach by the sea there are several very nice lakes to the north of Rome.  Lake Bracciano and lake Bolsena seem to be the most popular and have some nice lake resorts as well as lake Vico which is a smaller lake and is about half way between the two larger lakes.
